Short History:
The Saint Augustine Cathedral is the mother church of Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson and was constructed in 1776. In 1858, Rev. John Lamy sent a priest of his diocese Rev. Joseph Machebeuf to survey the conditions. Father Jean B. Salpointe was appointed as pastor of the new church in 1866. In 1868 the pastor was destined to become the first bishop. The church was rebuilt by Bishop Peter Bourgade in 1897; the original plans called for a Gothic structure, but the spires were never completed. The work of restoration was undertaken in 1966 and complete in 1968. That event conceded with 100 years of ecclesiastic jurisdiction in Arizona and the 100 year anniversary of the completion of the original church of San Augustin.
