Maxine Lloyd Lewis (1926-1988) was a Black San Luis Obispo community activist and founder of Grassroots II.

She was born September 30, 1926 in Longbranch, Texas, where she worked as a cook and did charity work. She married Jewel Lewis in approximately 1942, they would have eight children. She moved to San Luis Obispo from Longview, Texas in 1960, where she worked as a nurse at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center before working for the original Grassroots. After Grassroots closed, Maxine Lewis became the founding director of Grassroots II.

Maxine Lewis passed away May 15, 1988.

Lewis was the director of Grassroots II for 20 years, and was a member of St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, the San Luis Obispo chapter of the NAACP, and Union Funeraria Mexicana. She was awarded the Outstanding Community Service Award of the Atascadero State Hospital Jaycees in 1975, in recognition for her work with Grassroots II to provide people for hospital social events and housing for visitors of patients.
