There is a large population of California Sea Lions and a smaller more infrequent population of Stellar Sea Lions that visit San Francisco Bay. Sea lions congregate in big groups on Pier 39 and Seal Rocks and are present year round, but in greater numbers in winter. Sea Lions are intelligent, curious creatures that can swim great distances.
Climate change has been rough on Sea Lion populations. If you see a sea lion in distress, contact the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.
