Don José Darío Argüello owned the land grant of Rancho de las Pulgas in the early to mid 1800s.

When the Spanish land grants were challenged in the 1850s, the lawyer Simon Mezes helped Arguello's widow and children to get the title to the land. The land that Mezes ended up with turned into Redwood City.
