Pacific Boychoir Academy is an independent day school for boys in grades 4-8.
It's the only North American Boychoir school outside of the East Coast.
PBA offers a rigorous academic program, music education and choral training. They also run a touring summer program that takes chorists overseas every year.
The school started in 1998 when artistic director Kevin Fox launches a non-denominational after-school choral program in Oakland. And it wasn't until 2004 when a full academic school would open.
In the same year, the Grammy award for Best Classical Album goes to Mahler's 3rd Symphony, recorded by the San Francisco Symphony and Symphony Chorus under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, with the Pacific Boychoir and the San Francisco Girls Chorus.
In 2006 the school records it's first Spirituals CD, That Promised Land, and it receives the Academy of Gospel Music Award as well as the Friends of Negro Spirituals Award for Mr. Fox.
In 2007 the school performed Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil ("Vespers") in its entirety, for the first time in America as the piece was premiered: with an all-male choir including boy sopranos and boy altos.
In 2010 the school leased a long-term campus in north Oakland, conveniently accessible by public transport. PBA is the sole occupant of this campus, which includes a small theater as well as outdoor play space for the boys.
