Joseph Edward Smith (August 15, 1913 - February 13, 1999) was the 41st Mayor of Oakland from 1947 to 1949, and a member of the Oakland City Council 1947 to 1951.
Born in Oakland to Joseph John Smith, a mailman, and Elizabeth Dougherty Smith, he attend Clawson School, Grant School and St. Francis de Sales School in Oakland, before graduating from St. Mary's High School in Berkeley. After earning his A.B degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1935, Smith graduated with his LL.B. degree in 1938. Died at Rossmoor Walnut Creek California
Smith married G. Marie Phillips on January 7, 1939, and together had at least two children; Phillip J. Smith (June 1, 1940 - ?) and Barbara Smith (September 26, 1943 -?).
