The Law

Oakland law sets strict limits on how much each candidate can raise per contributor and spend overall. Below is a list of the limits: (read complete rules here)

Individuals and Entities

If Candidate DID NOT agree to expenditure ceiling: $100
If Candidate DID agree to expenditure ceiling: $700

Political Committees

If Candidate DID NOT agree to expenditure ceiling: $400
If Candidate DID agree to expenditure ceiling: $1,400

Candidates who pledge to limit spending cannot exceed $405,000 in spending during the race. If an independent expenditure committee spends a total of $104,000, it eliminates the expenditure ceiling for all candidates in the race. This happened during the 2010 Mayoral race.
