Overview

Yum Yum is a hotdog and ice cream shop that is well-known to locals in Greensboro, NC. Nestled on the campus of University of North Carolina at Greensboro, it’s also a favorite hangout spot for college students.

History

While the shop has been around for over a hundred years, it didn’t start out as the Yum Yum we know today. It began in 1906 by Wisdom Aydelette who sold ice cream out of a cart in downtown Greensboro. Later, in the 1920’s, it opened at a building on the corner of Spring Garden Street. At this time, the shop was called West End Ice Cream, but the Mr. Aydelette introduced a new ice cream flavor called Yum-Yum. The ice cream was a hit and the name stuck with patrons.

Eventually, the shop became known as Yum-Yum Ice Cream. They are well-known for their hotdogs, ice cream and serving Cheerwine. The shop is still owned by the Aydelette family. Wisdom’s son Bernard passed away in April 2017 at the age of 94. His son Clint Aydelette continues to run the shop. They only accept cash and the prices remain cheap. The 18 flavors are still made in the back with the same type of equipment that they used in the 1920’s.

Yum Yum’s, as the locals call them, has become an iconic location within Greensboro. Even after local kids grow up and move away, when they come back to visit, they stop for a trip to Yum Yum’s.
